Step 1: Back Up Your Data (Optional but Recommended)
Before you delete anything, make sure you’ve saved what you need.
Back up with iCloud:
- Connect your device to Wi-Fi.
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now.
Back up with a computer:
- Connect your iPhone/iPad to your computer.
- Open Finder (macOS Catalina and later) or iTunes (macOS Mojave or Windows).
- Select your device and click Back Up Now.
Step 2: Sign Out of Apple ID and iCloud
This removes the Activation Lock, allowing a new user to set up the device.
- Go to Settings > [your name].
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password to confirm.
- Tap Turn Off.
Step 3: Unpair Devices (if applicable)
If you're using an Apple Watch:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap All Watches, then the info (i) icon next to your watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
Also, disconnect any Bluetooth devices you want to keep private.
Step 4: Erase All Content and Settings
This completely wipes your device.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode or Screen Time passcode.
- Tap Erase iPhone/iPad to confirm.
Your device will restart and display the Apple logo while it erases.
Step 5: Remove SIM Card (If Applicable)
Use the SIM ejector tool or a paperclip to pop out the SIM tray and keep your card if needed.
