QUICK STEPS TO FACTORY RESET A CHROMEBOOK (WIPE DATA)

  1. Sign out of your Chromebook (if you're signed in).
  2. Press these keys at the same time:
    Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R
  3. In the box that pops up, click Restart.
  4. After it restarts, click Powerwash and then Continue.
  5. Your Chromebook will now factory reset — all data will be erased, and it will reboot fresh.

WHAT GETS ERASED:

  • Local files (Downloads folder, custom settings, etc.)
  • All user accounts and apps
  • Any saved Wi-Fi, preferences, etc.

NOTE: Anything stored in Google Drive or synced with your Google account will not be deleted — only what's on the Chromebook itself.

Bonus Tip (For Selling or Donating):

If you're handing it off to someone else, make sure to remove the device from your Google account:

  1. Go to: https://myaccount.google.com
  2. Click Security > Your Devices
  3. Remove the Chromebook from your account so the next user won’t be locked out by FRP (Factory Reset Protection).

Want help wiping a school-managed Chromebook or one that's locked down? That's a different process — let me know.
